On May 7, 2006, there was a fire at the popular neighborhood restaurant, The Gathering. Fortunately, no one was injured.

We thank the San Diego Fire Department for their quick response and all of our neighbors, customers and friends for their on going support and goodwishes. The reconstruction has taken much longer than anyone thought but when dealing with insurance there is a lot of time consuming documentation and approvals that need to be completed. The city's current building code requirements were a challenge and test to everyone involved. The building is over 50 years old and almost everything needed to be updated. The Gathering is like a new restaurant, especially in the kitchen where there was a lot of damage. A special thanks to Mark Mays for his help negotiating the insurance juggernaut. One bit of good news we were able to pay all the staff their regular wage. To this point everyone got paid and will be able to come back when we reopen. Most of the staff took other jobs and getting two checks. There are new chairs, bar stools, carpet, tile, air condition, lighting, new wall and ceiling colors, new exterior colors a lot to be excited about. We have a new chefs who can add new items and still provide your favorites. Many of you asked about your favorite employees, they all came back. Jack, Denise, Becky, Ashley, Alana, Holly, Jeff, Wendy, Rigo, Jose, Armando, Polo and a few others have all said there coming back, at least, on a part time basis. We tried to get Jack a new job but he still wants to come back (only kidding Jack's the best) and it wouldn't be The Gathering without Denise. Parkinson's and Dan ThomasOctober of 2005 the owner of the Gathering Dan Thomas was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's gradually slows the bodies ability to move and function normally. With Parkinson's in mind Dan says he is determined to have more fun at the restaurant and the most fun for Dan was when he was doing magic. So we are hoping Dan will stop "running the restaurant" long enough to do more magic and enjoy the restaurant. And if your at the restaurant and want to talk to Dan about Parkinson's please let us know as Dan is willing to share any experience or information related to Parkinson's
